Usually, Mar-a-Lago is a private club. The event was designed to raise money for terrorist victims about a month ago, chairwoman Anita Mitchell said. But the group decided to redirect the revenue to needy Floridians.

Some charitable groups could not raise enough money to continue their activities since terrorist acts started on Sept. 11, Mitchell said. “Let us know how your organization or you personally has been affected, “Mitchell said. We may be able to finance most of the requests we receive.

Money collected by the “Night of Stars “will be distributed by Mission Sandbox, a small non-profit group in West Palm Beach that helps local children. Mission Sandbox will not be one of the event’s beneficiaries, providing only free administrative services, said Mitchell, an officer in the Mission Sandbox.
